Abstract
The effect of a large amplitude Langmuir wave on the Weibel instabilit y in a plasma with an electron beam is studied. The electromagnetic pe rturbation couples to the Langmuir wave to give rise to two Langmuir s ideband waves, which in turn produce a current enhancing the electroma gnetic perturbation. The Langmuir wave enhances the growth over its li near value. The enhancement is larger at shorter wavelengths. For upsi lon(0)/c similar to 0.15, the growth rate is enhanced by a factor of 3 /2.
