We consider the spontaneous emission of a relativistic electron moving
inside a single-layer carbon nanotube and interacting without delay w
ith the screened nuclear charges of the carbon atoms. Electrons with a
n energy of 200 MeV may emit in their propagation direction quanta aro
und 6 MeV in energy and some 5 keV in linewidth. The results obtained
allow one to consider carbon nanotubes a new source of hard, monochrom
atic, highly directional radiation potentially suitable for the implem
entation of selective photonuclear reactions.
