Abstract
The development of a mini pulp evaluation procedure enables large numb ers of small pulp samples to be fully evaluated for their papermaking potential. Pulp refining is probably the most crucial component of any pulp evaluation procedure- The procedure described utilizes a small W aring Blendor as the laboratory refining device and uses a 5 g od. pul p charge for each beating level. A 5 g od. pulp charge will produce th ree traditional 1.2 g od. pulp handsheets which enables a large range of pulp properties to be Measured without significant deviation from i nternational sheetmaking and testing methods. The Waring Blendor acts as a high energy, low specific edge load refiner and gives an excellen t estimate of the potential strength development of a pulp. The perfor mance of the Waring Blendor as a laboratory refiner is compared with c onventional PFI Mill refining and commercial mill scale refining.
