''Community'' is a dynamic concept that is always developing, declinin
g or changing in some way. A ''sense of community'' is a noun. It is s
omething that can be possessed, achieved and marketed. It is a static
concept that lends itself to design solutions and physical determinism
. Urban planners, working in an achievement-oriented culture, are part
icularly prone to perceiving community in design terms. A reappraisal
of community results in a questioning of urban planning as currently u
ndertaken. These are the first steps towards more humane planning proc
esses.
