A laser Doppler anemometer (LDA) which uses both frequency tracking an
d Doppler burst counting techniques is developed and applied to measur
ements of a turbulent oscillating flow within a duct. It is shown that
by introducing controlled frequency shifts in the counter-based LDA s
ystem, large fluctuations in flows can be tracked. The limitations of
tracker- or counter-based LDA systems can thus be overcome and the per
formance is improved.
