Laminated hard disk heads with FeTaN films, which have high saturation
magnetic flux density of 16KG, have been newly developed for high den
sity magnetic recording. In this study, read/write characteristics for
FeTaN heads were evaluated and compared with the value for Sendust la
minated heads. The FeTaN heads have better overwrite characteristics b
y 10dB than Sendust heads. Even for 2400 Oe high coercivity media, the
overwrite value is -32dB. Output voltage for the FeTaN head is at lea
st 1.2times higher than that for a Sendust head. Popcorn noise and wig
gle noise are low enough for practical use. FeTaN heads are shown to h
ave a great potential to achieve high areal density recording.
