Abstract
Contact start / stop tests were conducted on hydrogenated carbon overc oated thin him disks to examine the influence of test environment on s tiction and durability. Results demonstrate that improved mechanical p erformance is observed for tests performed in nitrogen and argon and s harply reduced durabilities for tests in oxygen-containing environment s. Tests at higher humidities does not lead to improvements in disk du rability. The sensitivity to the test environment appears to be depend ent on the slider material.
