Ta. Yeh et al., CHARACTERIZATION OF CHANGE OF CARBON BONDING DUE TO SLIDING WEAR DAMAGE BY SCANNING AUGER MICROSCOPY, IEEE transactions on magnetics, 29(6), 1993, pp. 3939-3941
The alteration of carbon bonding resulting from the continuous frictio
nal heating between a magnetic head slider and a rotating thin film ri
gid disk has been investigated. This change of carbon bonding from dia
mondlike amorphous carbon phase to graphite phase was inspected by Sca
nning Auger Microscopy (SAM). As near and direct contact recording are
being considered for future high density disk drives, this phase tran
sformation of the protective carbon overcoating could result in failur
e of the head-disk interface.
