Abstract
Frequent just-in-time (JIT) deliveries, nowadays widely spread through
out manufacturing and service industries, are considered to be a major
cause of the deteriorating traffic situation. A truck-traffic coordin
ation system that shifts truck traffic from rush hours into time zones
of low traffic density is proposed. Very frequent JIT shipments becom
e obsolete without directly restricting the number of shipments. Moreo
ver, the concept encourages companies to use trucks that emit low nois
e and air pollution. The implications for JIT manufacturers are discus
sed and practical adjustments explained. The effect on the traffic sit
uation as well as on the JIT part-supply scheme is demonstrated throug
h examples.
