The oxidation of acetaldehyde on Cu(111) has been investigated using h
igh resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS). The molecul
e adsorbs in the eta(1) configuration at 110 K and desorbs without rea
ction. When oxygen is co-adsorbed, it reacts at 190 K to produce adsor
bed polyacetaldehyde. Heating this surface to 375 K produces an adsorb
ed acetate species and an, as yet unidentified, hydrocarbon moiety.
