The synthesis and e.p.r. spectra of some bis(thiosemicarbazonato)coppe
r(II) complexes in the polycrystalline state have been described. For
the complexes derived from thiosemicarbazones of acetophenone and prop
iophenone, the spectra are typical of triplet state molecules arising
from monomers associating to form dimers which exhibit spin-spin inter
action. The zero field splitting parameters have been calculated in th
ese cases. For other complexes, those derived from the thiosemicarbazo
nes of acetone, benzyl methyl ketone, cyclohexanone and diethyl ketone
, the spin-spin interactions are not strong, and the resulting e.p.r.
features are similar to monomeric copper(II).
