Abstract
The efficiency of improvement in design of two similar optimization me thods of designing multilayer optical thin film devices is compared. S ix different devices of varying complexities are chosen as design exam ples for the comparison. The results demonstrate that the design metho d using damped least squares technique with indirect derivatives gives superior and efficient designs compared to the design method using th e same technique with direct and exact derivatives.
