This article discusses experiences and lessons learned from the design
of an open hypermedia system. one that integrates applications and da
ta not ''owned'' by the hypermedia. The work was conducted under the a
uspices of the DeV!se project at the computer science department of Aa
rhus University, Denmark 15). The DeVise project is developing general
tools to support experimental system development and cooperative desi
gn in a variety of application areas including large engineering proje
cts. The intensely collaborative, open-ended work characteristics of s
uch settings make demands beyond the cross linking traditionally suppo
rted by hypermedia. These include a shared database. access from multi
ple platforms, portability. extensibility and tailorability. (For a de
tailed discussion of our engineering project use setting and its CSCW
and hypermedia requirements, see [3, 4].)
