Abstract
A water soluble lignin copolymer has been synthesized by modifying org anosolv lignin at the phenolic hydroxyl position with poly(ethylene gl ycol)methyl ether (MPEG). Lignin model compounds (guaiacol and dehydro diisoeugenol) were derivatized with MPEG and characterized by H-1 and C-13 NMR, and by 2D HETCOR experiments. Chemical shifts and coupling i nformation obtained for the terminal O-methylene on the MPEG chain pro ve that covalent linkage of this chain with the lignin substrate is ac hieved.
