In this work we describe the stability of positively charged polystyre
ne particles dispersed in aqueous binary mixtures (50% v/v) of methano
l, ethanol, 1-propanol and 2-propanol. Rate constants for rapid coagul
ation are found to be 20-50% of those predicted by the Smoluchowski th
eory. The dependence of W (stability factor) on ionic strength and liq
uid composition has been compared with the predictions of DLVO theory.
