H. Schone et al., HOMING WITH OR WITHOUT SIGHT OF SURROUNDINGS AND SKY DURING DISPLACEMENT IN THE DIGGER WASP BEMBIX ROSTRATA (HYMENOPTERA-SPHECIDAE), Ethology, ecology and evolution, 5(4), 1993, pp. 549-552
In Bembix rostrata homing times were recorded after releases from E(as
t)-sites (unknown) and from S(outh)-sites (familiar). Displacement was
with (''open'') or without sight (''box'') of surroundings and sky. A
t E-releases the ''open'' wasps were faster than the ''box'' wasps. Th
e S experiments, however, resulted in longer homing times for the ''op
en'' wasps. The results are discussed with respect to recent hypothese
s of path integration and landmark orientation.
