The underground cooling water system for the new 1000 MW Barking Reach
Power Station on the Thames estuary east of London formed a major ele
ment of this privately funded $370 million turnkey project. A wide ran
ge of tunnelling and shaft sinking techniques were used to overcome th
e difficult ground conditions, which included the notorious Thanet San
d. Though many problems were encountered, the easy and direct contact
between designers and constructors which was afforded by the design-an
d-construct approach helped to ensure that the award-winning project w
as completed on time and within budget.
