PHENANTHRENES AND OTHER PHENOLICS FROM IN-VITRO CULTURES OF MARCHANTIA-POLYMORPHA

Two new phenanthrenes, 2,3-dimethoxy-7-hydroxyphenanthrene, 2,7-dihydr oxy-3-methoxyphenanthrene, three new biphenanthrenes, ethoxy-2,2',7,7' -tetrahydroxy-1,1'-biphenanthrene, 3-methoxy-2,2',3',7,7'pentahydroxy- 1,1' -biphenanthrene, 2,2',3,3',7,7'-hexahydroxy-1,1'-biphenanthrene a nd a new phenylisocoumarin, 3-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-8-hydroxyisocoumar in were isolated from the methanolic extract of sterile cultures of th e liverwort Marchantia polymorpha. Their structures were elucidated fr om spectroscopic data.
