A case of colonic plasmacytoma with suspected pulmonary and gastric me
tastases is reported. The first manifestations were neuro-ophthalmic d
isorders due to hyperviscosity. The gastric and pulmonary lesions were
found ten years after surgery and chemotherapy for the colonic tumor.
Following additional chemotherapy the patient is doing well. The valu
e of immunohistochemistry using immunofluorescence and immunoperoxidas
e techniques for the diagnosis of monoclonal plasma cell growth is und
erlined. The risk of metastases to a variety of organs is discussed, w
ith emphasis on the tendency of this plasma cell tumor to locate in mu
cous membranes.
