A direct correlation was found between fractional losses of added N an
d the change in deltaN-15 parts per thousand during 19 years in an exp
eriment with annual additions of N at three rates to a Scots pine (Pin
us sylvestris L.) forest in northern Sweden. This confirms that proces
ses leading to losses of N discriminate against N-15, and opens possib
ilities to conduct retrospective studies of the N balance in forests.
