Abstract
Applications of alpha-amino acids in the total synthesis of amino suga rs are reviewed. Methods for stereoselective elongation of the carbon- chain are discussed. Preparation of particularly important synthons, N -protected alpha-amino aldehydes, is outlined. Lastly, recent total sy ntheses of amino sugars and related compounds froin alpha-amino acids are presented.
