Abstract
A critical analysis of the difference between the classical and quantu m mechanical definitions of scattering cross sections for particles is presented. This leads to a clarification of the classical limit probl em and suggests precise criteria for its validity. In particular these criteria are derived for both finite and infinite range potentials.
