We present a new method for studying the electronic states of crystals
in a magnetic field which enables us to calculate the Landau level en
ergies and wavefunctions microscopically. The method is applied to bul
k GaAs and a GaAs/AlGaAs short-period superlattice. The results explic
itly show the effects of non-parabolicity, anisotropy and state-mixing
s on both Landau level spectra and wavefunctions.
