Abstract
Based on EPR observation of diethyl carbonate ketyl radical, CIDNP sig nals due to both the product ethyl alpha-cyanophenylacetate and DMSO i mpunty in the solvent DMSO-d(6), as well as the fitness to succesive f irst-order kinetics, an electron-transfer initiated non-chain radical mechanism is proposed for the reaction between alpha-cyanobenzyl carba nion sodium salt (1) and diethyl carbonate (2) in DMSO.
