The FNAL E799 Collaboration has carried out a search for the lepton-fa
mily number violating decay pi(0) --> mu(+/-)e(-/+) using pi(0)'s prod
uced from K-L --> pi(0) pi(0) pi(0) decays in flight. No events were o
bserved. Assuming that lepton-family number violation is charge indepe
ndent, the 90% confidence level upper limit on 1/2[BR(pi(0) --> mu(+)e
(-))+BR(pi(0) --> mu(-)e(+))] was determined to be 8.6 x 10(-9).
