The wave function is used to calculate the traversal time of a resonan
t tunnelling structure. It is established that the traversal time incr
eases with increasing width and height of the barriers as well as the
width of the well. Based on the real part of the quantum mechanical wa
ve impedance, the traversal time is calculated using the transmission
matrix approach and the results are in good agreement with other repor
ted theoretical and experimental results. Traversal times as a functio
n of applied voltage and Fermi energy level are calculated.
