A study was made of the polarographic behaviour of the genotoxic subst
ance 1-(4'-bromophenyl)-3, 3-dimethyltriazene and optimum conditions w
ere found for its determination by tast polarography and differential-
pulse polarography at a static mercury drop electrode in the concentra
tion range 1 x 10(-4) -1 x 10(-7) mol dm(-3). The results indicate tha
t the method can be used at pH between 4.5 and 6.0 for the identificat
ion and determination of the investigated substance, which is protonat
ed without decomposition in this pH range. It was established that for
the reduction of the N = N group four electrons are required and the
resulting products are 4-bromoaniline and dimethylhydrazine.
