The synthesis of a series of acid dues obtained by diazotization of p-
alkylanilines and coupling with 1-(and 2-) naphthol sulphonic acid der
ivatives is described The effects of the alkyl groups on the colour, d
yeing, and fastness properties of the dyes are discussed. The dyes col
oured polyamide fibres well. It is concluded that substantivity, water
-repellency, and wet-fastness of the dyes an polyamide fibres increase
with increase in the chain length of the alkyl groups, provided that
the dyes dissolve completely in the dyebath.
