Abstract
Transient Raman spectra of the ''twisted'' S-1 state of tetraphenyleth ylene and its C-13 analogue have been measured. The olefinic C0C0 stre tching frequency changes drastically on going from the S-0 state to th e S-1 state, supporting a twisted configuration of S-1 tetraphenylethy lene. The CC stretching frequencies of the phenyl rings are discussed in relation to the zwitterionic nature of this S-1 state.
