We present a patient with cutaneous mucinosis of the mammary areolae w
ho developed multiple erythematous macules with clearly defined, geogr
aphical edges 1 year after diagnosis. These lesions demonstrated mycos
is fungoides on histology. We discuss a possible association between t
he mucinosis and the mycosis fungoides. The various forms of primary m
ucinosis have been described as having different associations. Seconda
ry mucinosis, particularly follicular mucinosis, map be associated wit
h mycosis fungoides (MF). Our patient presented a previously undescrib
ed form of cutaneous mucinosis, localized to the mammary areolae, that
was associated with MF. We discuss the suggestion that forms of cutan
eous mucinosis other than follicular mucinosis should be taken into ac
count as possible markers for the development of MF.
