Abstract
Serum apolipoprotein E (ApoE) was determined in 85 patients(72 +/- 9 y ears; mean age +/- SD) with acute cerebral infarction and in 170 contr ols matched for age and sex. Total ApoE levels were normal but HDL-Apo E levels were significantly lower in the stroke patients (21.85 +/- 9. 31 vs. 38.25 +/- 14.17 mg/l; p < 0.001). Patients with concomitant car diac arrhythmia tended to have the same lower levels than those withou t cardiac arrhythmia. Lower HDL-ApoE levels seem to be an important ri sk factor for cerebral infarction.
