Abstract
Thin films (about 10 nm) of Y2O3 have been deposited on type 304 stain less steel using a Langmuir-Blodgett processing technique. Coated as w ell as uncoated samples have been oxidized in air at 1073 K. The effec t on oxidation has been studied for exposures up to 50 h. The Y2O3 fil m reduces the oxidation rate by orders of magnitude. A significant red uction in the oxidation rate is also seen with a preoxidation treatmen t but the Y2O3 film produces the thinnest oxide scale (0.25 mu m).
