Abstract
The previous development of epidemiology in the German veterinary medi cine is described. An institute of epizootiology and control of animal diseases was established in 1985 and its tasks are described. A conce pt for the further development of epidemiology includes control of ani mal diseases, preventive veterinary medicine and protection of the env ironment and consumer. Epidemiology is defined as an area of integrati on of various specialised disciplines. The combination of epidemiologi cal and economic investigations is necessary.
