From February 1991 to February 1992 50 chinchilla bucks were examined,
after pelting, for the presence of fatty liver. Macroscopical and lig
ht microscopical changes in the liver were observed in 4 7 animals. In
24 cases the histological changes were physiological (steatosis). In
the remaining 23 cases histopathological changes were found. Only two
of the pelts of the 17 animals which had serious histopathological fin
dings were fully mature. The other pelts were either immature or were
over mature. Further investigations of this condition are recommended.
