S. Mereghetti et al., THE DISCOVERY OF PROPER MOTION OF GEMINGA OPTICAL COUNTERPART, Nuovo cimento della Societa italiana di fisica. C, Geophysics and space physics, 16(5), 1993, pp. 651-654
After reviewing the evidence that the X/gamma-ray source 1E0630 + 178/
Geminga is a relatively young, isolated neutron star similar to the Ve
la Pulsar, we present our recent discovery of the proper motion of its
faint optical counterpart. This measurement confirms the proposed opt
ical identification, and suggests a distance of the order of 100 pc, c
onsistent with the upper limits derived from the Geminga high-energy e
mission. The hypothetical nearby supernova event which originated Gemi
nga about 350000 years ago is also briefly discussed.
