Beam loss due to charge exchange scattering leads to a fundamental lim
it for the acceptable storage time. Recently measured cross-sections f
or Bi1+ and Au1- are evaluated in a computer program, which takes into
account the variation of beam temperature and density in the storage
ring due to strong focusing. In particular we have found that in case
of Bi1+ the loss is increasing with emittance, whereas for Au1- the be
haviour is the opposite due to a different dependence of the ion cross
-sections on collision energy. Examples are presented for driver stora
ge rings. Several examples of synchrotrons for an experimental facilit
y leading beyond the threshold of radiation conversion physics have be
en studied.
