Following the clinical observation of a depressed man who tried to com
mit suicid while unemployed, the authors discussed among themselves th
e human effects of developing ressession, unemployment and economic ha
rdships, and to the extent the effects are psychological or social. Wh
en considering the social distress caused they tried to avoid a too me
dical/psychiatrical view point but rather how to help alleviate the so
cial suffering caused and how the district psychiatric services may mo
st effectively cooperate with the others social services in the city.
