Abstract
A study of serial thin sections and freeze-fracture replicas of Petros ia ficiformis (Poiret) (Demospongia) mesohyl revealed specialized cell s (bacteriocytes) housing symbionts within large vacuoles. Adhesion si tes between the symbiont envelope and vacuolar membrane are compared w ith similar differentiations previously described in Insect endocytobi osis.
