A report is given on measurements of soot immissions carried out at an
intersection with high traffic in Dusseldorf in order to develop and
to examine a suitable testing method for diesel-soot in ambient air. T
he obtained values of 1991 are compared with those of 1990, correlated
with the concentrations of CO and NO as well as black-smoke data and
compared with measurements at other locations. The testing method is b
ased on discontinuous sampling of respirable dust followed by determin
ation of total carbon (TC) and of the carbon content after liquid extr
action (EC). In 1991 the EC-values varied between 5 <mu>g/m3 and 23 <m
u>g/m3. Performance characteristics of the method are presented and th
e influence of systematic errors is discussed. The variation of the so
ot concentration in the course of a day is presented.
