Abstract
75 mothers of mentally retarded children answer questionnaires concern ing child temperament, parental attitudes, control orientations and co ping behaviors in everyday stress situations. In generally, they claim no more stress than mothers of a control group, but there are conside rable individual differences. Mothers with a high parenting stress lev el feel less competent in problem solving and tend to dysfunctional '' self-blaming''- or ''blaming-the-child''-attitudes.
