Abstract
This is a review paper which traces the origins of our understanding o
f the behaviour of shear layers separating from the leading edge of a
bluff body and the key role played by turbulence, in particular the ef
fect on the pressures developed under the reattaching shear layer. The
importance of the leading edge phenomenon in a number of wind enginee
ring applications has also been summarised.
