Abstract
The chemical composition of the tungsten surface subjected to thermal cycling in vacuum has been investigated by using Auger and X-ray photo electron spectroscopy. Tungsten carbide W2C is shown to form on the su rface of the tungsten wire in an ''oil vacuum''. The eutectoid decompo sition of W2C causes surface damage.
