An identification technique is devised for SDOF dynamical mechanical s
ystems under random excitations. The system is assumed to be governed
by a non-linear equation of motion in general form, in which the resto
ring force and the dissipative terms are given by arbitrary power func
tions. Algebraic equations are obtained for the expectations of some s
uitable excitation and response quantities. It is shown that these equ
ations are valid for any stationary random excitations if the system a
ttains the steady state. Based on these equations, an identification t
echnique has been devised and verified experimentally for white noise
and coloured (pink) noise random excitations. (C) 1997 Academic Press
