A variety of detection systems are currently in operation at Trombay f
or monitoring intakes of actinides by occupational workers of fuel fab
rication/reprocessing plants. This paper describes the detection syste
ms, their associated electronic instrumentation and performance charac
teristics and brings out the advantages offered by them in investigati
ng actual cases of actinide intakes. Illustrative data for one case ar
e presented which appeared initially to be of inhalation intake, at on
e stage as that of inhalation and injection intakes, and was finally i
dentified as that of an intake by injection (i.e. through a contaminat
ed wound) alone, thanks to the availability of various detection syste
ms and sophisticated data analysis techniques.
