Abstract
The technique of resistive plate counters, equipped with pad readout i nstead of strips, has been successfully used for the first time in a h igh rate environment. The performance of the muon detector of E771, ba sed on this technique, is illustrated in detail, including the depende nce of the efficiency on the local rate of incident particles.
