Abstract
Lumped perturbations of a soliton, such as gain, filtering, and amplit ude and phase modulation, are considered. A new formalism is developed to compute the continuum generated by these perturbations through the use of adjoint functions. An exact expression for the continuum in th e far field is obtained.
