Myxomas, the most common primary cardiac tumors, rarely become infecte
d. This report describes a patient with a right atrial myxoma and a ve
ry unusual and life-threatening complication: infection with resultant
bacteremia. The few cases reported in the literature are reviewed. Th
e relevance of transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) in the diagnosis
and assessment of atrial masses is emphasized.
