The carotenoid content of Botryococcus braunii, race L strain YIC2 ana
lysed in the stationary phase of growth was 0.23% of the dry wt. Detai
led analysis revealed the presence of echinenone (5% of total caroteno
ids), (3S)-3-hydroxyechinenone (21%), canthaxanthin (14%), (3S, B'S)-a
staxanthin (5%), (3S, 3'R)-adonixanthin (42%), lutein and zeaxanthin (
together 7%) and two minor unidentified carotenoids (6%). Methods empl
oyed for the identifications were chromatographic properties (TLC, HPL
C), VIS-spectra, MS,H-1 NMR and CD data in comparison with authentic c
arotenoids. The chirality of astaxanthin was determined by the camphan
ate method. This strain differs from the previously examined strain YI
C1 in its ability to carry out 3(3)-hydroxylation of the secondary car
otenoids; (3S, 3'R)-adonixanthin is the major carotenoid in the statio
nary phase of growth.
