Abstract
A technique for selective placement of carboxylic acid groups on kraft fibres is described. Topochemistry of acidic groups was confirmed wit h a novel scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectro metry (SEM-EDS) technique. Paper strength testing indicates that selec tive placement of acidic groups on or near a fibre's outer surface can substantially increase the fibre-to-fibre specific bond strength.
