Americans' participation in community and civic activities has decline
d over the last several decades. This article describes a project in w
hich social work faculty, practitioners, and students cooperated to de
velop and implement a local, college-based community service project t
o house the homeless. The author focuses on the impact of a Service Le
arning Seminar-a one-credit course that combined academic and communit
y service work-on students' prosocial attitudes. He discusses the proj
ect's theoretical basis, the research findings, methodological weaknes
ses, and implications for the future.
